Medusa is a gorgon in Greek mythology. Her sisters, Euryale and Stheno, are immortal, unlike her.
1. Why does she have snake hair?
There's a myth that Medusa was a young woman too proud of her hair. She was dating Poseidon. They kissed in an Athena temple. This event angered Athena, who was jealous of Medusa. In revenge, she changed her hair into snakes.
2. Its power:
Anyone who looks her in its eyes is petrified.
3. The Perseus legend
Perseus, a hero son of Zeus and Danae, a mere mortal, was one day received by the king of the island of Seryphos, Polydectes, who fell in love with his mother; considering Perseus as an obstacle to seduce her, he sent him to kill Medusa. Athena, Poseidon, and Ares, to help him, offered him a shield with which he could see Medusa without being seen by her, a helmet that made him invisible, flying sandals, an indestructible sickle, and a pouch to carry Medusa's head.
When Perseus arrived in front of Medusa, she first tried to petrify him with her gaze, but thanks to her shield, she could not turn him into stone. He then put on the helmet to become invisible, approached Medusa, and cut off her head with his sickle, from his blood were born the winged horse Pegasus and the giant Chrysaor.
